As some of you may already know, and after much recent discussion, we have just decided that after the wedding we will be moving to Edmonton, Alberta. We will certainly miss being so close to our family and friends, but knowing that the wedding is the beginning of our new life together we have decided now is the time for a fresh start.
Given that we will be driving to Edmonton we do not have the space or ability to bring much with us, because of this we have decided not to register for tangible gifts; but have decided to go with a “Honeyfund” or as we are calling it “New Beginning fund” :-). Please feel free to contact our parents or members of our wedding party if you have any questions. Thanks to everybody for your support and we can’t wait to see you all on our Big Day!!!!
After Drew’s proposal, when I eventually came down from cloud nine…lol, I realized I had to start planning asap and of course I had to choose the girls for my bridal party. One of the girls is actually my biological sister but all of them feel like sisters to me. My maid of honour is my sister Lisa Beazer and my matron of honor is one of my closest friends, Sade Miller. My other bridesmaids are my cousin, Tulcia Clarke and another close friend, Soraya Merchant. Ladies, thanks so much for being there for me. You are my girls for life. Love you all!
After Tulsa and I became engaged, the first time I thought about who I wanted standing up at the alter with me (other than Tulsa of course...lol) these four guys immediately came into my mind; and I never second guessed it. My best man is my brother Bryn Smith and my groomsmen are my closest friends; Wajeeh Khan, Devon Guile and of course Brent Sievert. Thanks for being there guys!

Wedding Party and parents of the Bride and Groom only
First off let me say that my parents are extremely hard working, caring, loyal, and most of all loving people; who put family ahead of everything else (which is saying a lot considering they are both very successful in the corporate world). I will admit I was a little spoiled growing up :-), but other than that my parent have instilled some very important values in me; to be honest, kind to others, open-minded, and to never judge.
I used to love how my mom and I had picnics on the living room floor when I was younger and how we would have movie days when I was home sick from school, she is the best mom anybody could ever have!
As I mentioned in my Groom section, my dad taught me how to play golf and I can honestly say some of the best times of my life have been on the golf course with him. Thanks dad, I will always be grateful for everything you have taught and done for me!
I must say that my older brother Bryn was one person I loved to annoy growing up; I don’t know how he put up with me :-). My brother and I have rather different personalities and we had our fair share of tussles when we were younger, but we also had a lot of good times too. More recently, before he moved to Toronto, we spent a lot of time watching movies and older Game Shows (from the 60’s and 70’s) on GSN together, let’s just say we liked to make our own commentary…lol.
My brother has always been supportive of me and was always there when I needed a favour. I am very fortunate to have such an awesome brother and I couldn’t imagine having grown up without him. Thanks for being there Brynnie and I promise I will stop messing with you someday! :-)
My mom has always been there for me; through good times and bad, no matter what. She has been so supportive in every way; she works hard and has been a rock for me. Being a single parent was not easy for her but she did it. Growing up, she has always put us first and left herself for last. She taught me so much. I have to point out that while growing up, I always looked forward to birthdays because on our birthdays our gift was 3 or more cakes baked from scratch by our mom. Who wouldn’t be excited for that :-).
I also will never forget some Sunday afternoons where we would all get dressed up and go for walks and have ice cream…yum yum; those were the days! And I can’t forget about us walking to the beach after we got home from church, spending a few hours there and then coming home to make/eat Sunday dinner. I also loved when my mom dressed us up and took us to Carnival every year. I couldn’t wait for July to come…lol. She also loved taking and keeping lots of pictures of us :-).
Another thing I have to mention is that my mom was so supportive with my move to Canada since some Caribbean parents find it hard to let go of their children.. All in all, my mom was a strict mom but I am very grateful to have her since it made me the woman I am today. Thanks Mom! Love you
My brother is a year older than I am. You know when you’re a child and you were asked the question ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ and you say doctor, lawyer, teacher etc. Well my brother said “doctor” and that is what he is today. He was always a bit of a book worm growing up :-).
My brother and I have generally always gotten along, but I can’t say the same for him and my sister…lol. I am the middle child and always tried to keep the peace between them as kids :-P. I have to say, I always use to love being his back-up singer in his imaginary band…lol. I won’t say too much more about that but I have to add, he was a good song writer and I do miss those singing days :-). My brother is a very cool person to talk to especially about world events and politics. It is great having a big brother, especially one like him!
My sister is a year and a half younger than I am. She too, like my brother, is in the medical field; she is working on becoming a nurse. Of course we were like any other sisters growing up; we had times when we fought but also had lots of good times. Looking back, it was always fun fighting over who gets to use a specific little fork, for dinner, that we both loved. Pretty silly huh…lol. It was also pretty cool when we would go out and our mom would dress us in the same outfits, expect in two different colours. We both always seemed to stick to our colour. I loved playing doll house with my sister, and of course, us fighting over dolls and toys.
As we got older, we got closer and I am so happy to not only call her my sister but my friend as well :-). As adults we now see things in a more mature way, but can always look back on our younger days and laugh. My sister is also easy to get along with (now that she is older…lol) and it is awesome to have her as my younger sis!
December 16, 2013: It was just another Monday morning at work. I spoke to Drew earlier in the morning, as I always did. Then around 12:22 p.m. he called me and told me that he just got a call from the bank and that our account has been compromised. I was quite shocked and confused and knowing me, I asked question after question. Drew kept on saying that the person at the bank didn't say much and that they requested that we come in asap to get this sorted out since it cannot be done over the phone.
Drew knew that I normally take my lunch at 1:00 p.m. so he suggested that he would come and get me at 1:00 p.m. for us to get to the Coburg and Robie Scotiabank branch since that is our home branch. I said sure, 1:00 p.m. will be fine. If anyone knows me, they know that I am normally late for many things (except work of course). So there I thought, “I have lots of time to eat my lunch before Drew comes.” At 1:00 p.m. Drew called and said he was downstairs. I was still eating and thought to myself, “why was Drew here so soon?” If you know me well, you know that I love my food so I took a few more bites and told Drew that I am on my way.
As soon as I got into the car I started to question again as to why and how our account got compromised. He said again that he was not sure and didn't have a lot of information since the bank was not willing to share too much without seeing identification. So of course I was still a bit spectacle and couldn’t wait to get to the bank to sort this out. It only took us a few minutes to get to the branch. Drew parked the car, we got out and I put my gloves on. Drew asked me why I was putting on my gloves when we were only steps away from the door. I said "it's winter; it's cold. I want them on but will take them off when I get inside.”
We got inside the branch and our good friend and favourite teller (Kathy) was closed off. We went up to her and greeted her etc. We had our little chit chat and then our other friend and former boss (Beth), the manager of customer service, came over and also chatted with us. Drew then said that we were there to see Joe or John [pretending that he didn't remember the name..lol], the personal banking officer who called him about our account being compromised. Kathy said that his office was downstairs and she would take us there. We went downstairs and she told us to hold on since he was not in his office and she would go and look for him in the back.
It was at that point that Drew looked into my eyes and said “Tully, I lied.” Of course my radar went way up and was waiting to hear why he would have lied to me. He continued, “We didn’t come here because our account was compromised, we came here because…” Now I have to stop there and let you know that it was only at that point that I clued in and broke down in tears. Drew gave the most amazing speech, went down on one knee and asked me to marry him. As Drew was speaking, I was crying. Who would have thought that Drew could have tricked me so well and I would have cried as much as I did when he proposed..lol. I will not give you the details of what he said in his speech but some points that I will highlight are, he said that this was the exact spot where he first laid eyes on me and we officially introduced ourselves, he fell in love with me, he knew I was the one and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me (and much more). And of course I said “YES.”
He placed the ring (which he had custom made just for me) on my finger, got off his knee and we kissed. He then gave me flowers. And then the clapping by Kathy and the two personal banking offers began. At this point I was still crying happy tears and still in shock that I was engaged and Drew actually surprised me so well. Kathy gave us a hug and congratulated us. We then went back upstairs and Beth gave us a hug and also congratulated us, along with the other employees in the branch. Of course they all knew and were all in on the surprise. Thank goodness it was a slow day at the branch and there was only one customer leaving the branch and another coming in…lol. It was a perfect proposal and Drew could not have done a better or more perfect job.
PS: He knew I would have figured it out if he had done the proposal any other way since I am a master at figuring out and dissecting stuff. I am still all smiles when I think about this day. Good job sweetie, good job!
It all began one February morning back in 2009. I had recently started my first Co-op term working at the Coburg and Robie Scotiabank branch; and in she walked. I was at the bottom of the stairs in the lower level of the branch filing away various documents and I heard someone coming down. When I looked up I couldn’t believe what I saw; the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life (at this point I was looking forward to the rest of my Co-op term a lot more :-) …lol).
After talking to some of her friends and colleagues, one of which being our very good friend Kathy, she came over to me and introduced herself. I can’t remember exactly what I said but I think it had something to do with how interesting and nice I thought her name was; “Tulsa”. Anyways after that she went about her business probably not thinking twice about me, but in my mind all I could think about was “how can I get this amazing woman to notice me and let me into her life?”
Over the next few weeks I started laying on the ole Drew Smith charm, and to my surprise it actually worked. I could not believe how lucky I was that such a beautiful, thoughtful, “exotic” woman happened to be working at the same place I had been hired on for my Co-op term (if you remember from my “About the Groom” section I had mention that enrolling in DAL’s Commerce Co-op program was the best decision of my life; this [a.k.a Tulsa] is why).
There was one moment in particular I remember that made me think I might have a real shot with this girl and prompted me to take things to the next level. She was on the phone and I came over and started jokingly bugging her about a Tim’s run. I began playing around and got her laughing and at that moment she reached over and held onto my arm and I felt something. I don’t exactly know what, but I believe it was at that moment I feel in love with her. The rest after that is history. I eventually took her out, we had a lot of fun/exciting times, I got her to fall in love with me (but of course how couldn’t she..lol) and here we are 5 years later still as in love (if not more so) as we were in the very beginning. Now I am just waiting for our Big Day so I can officially make her my wife!
Aww…. Drew is so good at that stuff and definitely more mushy than I am..lol. Perfect explanation sweetie! I couldn’t have told it better .
I was born in Saint John, New Brunswick (I guess St./Saint John wanted Tulsa and I to be together..lol) and moved to Halifax when I was 7 years old. I grew up with two loving parents and a brother I loved to mess with (and still do). I played a lot of sports growing up; hockey for 5 years between ages 5-10 (I only scored 1 goal and it was in a practice…you can probably tell why I stopped), soccer I was a little better at (I know that is not saying much) and played that during most of my teenage years. My favourite sport though is golf. I was taught by my father at a young age and plan on playing for the rest of my life.
After High School I attended Dalhousie University for my post-secondary education. I completed my Commerce Co-op Degree in 2011, and I must say enrolling in the Co-op program was the best decision I have ever made (which you will learn why in the “Our Story” section). I enjoy weight lifting, watching movies, eating (mainly my Sweetie’s amazing food)..lol, spending time with friends and family and of course my bride to be, Tulsa (a.k.a Tully) who I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with!
I was born in the small Caribbean island of Antigua. I grew up in the village of Villa Area in the city of St. John’s. I am the second of 3 children for my mother. I grew up with my mother, brother, sister, grandmother, aunt, uncle and five cousins in our family home. Growing up with such a big family, cooking was a big thing. I absolutely loved being in the kitchen with my grandmother so I learned how to cook when I was 8, or maybe even younger, and still enjoy cooking today. I also watched my mom and aunt do braiding, learned when I was young and still enjoy doing that as well. When we got a bit older, my mother, brother, sister and I went to live on our own. Generally growing up, we didn’t have much but we had each other and of course, loved each other. I do have to add, that going up on such a beautiful island, enjoying the fresh air and the sun, sea and sand everyday was amazing.
After going through Primary and Secondary School, then 2 years of college at home, I worked for a few years and then decided to move to Canada to go to University. Obviously, this was the best move of my life since I met the love of my life (Drew) here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I went to St. Mary’s University where I completed my Commerce Degree in 2009 and now I am back in the world of work. Other than obviously loving to cook and braid hair, I am a very hard worker. I also enjoy talking with my friends and family, working out when I’m in the mood, singing along to songs, watching movies and falling asleep..lol
Recently, I have been extremely busy with planning our wedding. One never knows what a bride goes though until they are actually the bride. That being said, no matter what happens or what might go right or wrong, I cannot wait for our perfect day to marry Drew and spend the rest of my life with him!
It has been one full year since we have been married and what an eventful year it has been..lol. A year of love, laughter and (new) life...with many more to come. We just want to say thank you for all of your love and support!
